In the past 2-3 years, edtech companies in India have witnessed a spurt, established players have aimed at catering to conventional needs such as a digital classroom and e-book and startups have come up with innovative products like learning apps and experiential learning solutions aimed at making learning engaging but still fun.
However, the spurt has not matched up to adoption yet. In order to truly make it big, there are many challenges that the sector has to overcome in order to truly make it big:
Slow device penetration rate: Device penetration will be one of the reasons behind edtech’s success in India as predicted by many reports and studies. However, digital devices are still beyond the means and reach of many parents.
Parents skeptical about screen time: Maintaining a balance between screen time and other real-world activities that a child indulges in is of utmost importance. However, many parents are still skeptical about the benefits of educational screen time. Children spending too much of time on an educational app is not encouraged by parents.
Culture of buying edtech products online is not widespread: The growth of B2C edtech products solely depends on online purchases by parents. However, that trend is yet to catch up, resulting in sellers being forced to resort to door-to-door selling which is limited in its scope and scale. Buying edtech goods online will lead to more adoption; parents will also have a wide range of products to choose from.
